Science Confirms the Effectiveness of Hypnosis for Quitting Smoking

In fact, to find the most effective way to quit smoking, scientists Frank Schmidt and Chockalingam Viswesvaran of the University of Iowa carried out a large scale analysis, statistically combining the results of more than 600 scientific studies covering almost 72 thousand people from America, Scandinavia and elsewhere in Europe.

By combining the results from so many separate studies on the effectiveness of stop smoking techniques, the meta-analysis enabled the real effectiveness of any technique to be clearly seen.

The results were reported in the prestigious scientific journal New Scientist:  “Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little.”

Other More Recent Studies

A study of 186 outpatients  (93 male and 93 female) examined the facilitation of smoking cessation by using hypnosis. After the 2 week program, 92% or 86 of the men and 90% or 84 of the women reported abstinence, and at 3 months follow-up, 86% of the men and 87% of the women reported continued abstinence.

During 1997, 2,810 smokers participated in a single group hypnotherapy stop smoking session which was evaluated at a less effective success rate than individualized hypnosis sessions. However, even group hypnosis sessions were demonstrated to be more effective than drug interventions.

In this study 43 patients underwent a specific hypnotherapy treatment protocol integrated with a Rapid Smoking (RS) procedure to stop smoking. Of these, 39 people, or 90.6%, reported remaining abstinent from tobacco use at follow-up (6 months to 3 years post-treatment).

67 patients with a cardiopulmonary diagnosis completed the study representing 16 controls and 14, 19, 18 subjects in each of the Hypnosis (H), Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), and NRT+H groups, respectively. 6 months after discharge 25.0% of the control subjects, 50.0% of the hypnosis group, 15.78% of the NRT and 50% of the NRTH group were non smokers.

The IQuitNOW Integrative Hypnosis Stop Smoking Protocol is designed as a 3 sessions program with the following targets:
  • Core Session 1: The Smoking Sniper.

In this session, we’ll de-energise your beliefs that smoking does anything of value to you. Before the main part of the session we will work live with one of your craving sensations and teach you the craving buster technique to wipe out any of these, so that, should they ever arise in the future, you can effortlessly wipe them out in less than a minute.

By doing this we will extinguish the reasons for why you smoke and the fears you may hold about quitting. In hypnosis we’ll get you to fully associate and feel the effects of smoking as well as the multitude of benefits of being smoke-free, happy and satisfied. This technique alone is so powerful that many of the changes happen right here.

You will also get to recode your past memories of smoking and release your emotional and psychological associations to that old habit. In addition, we’ll use a number of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) exercises to educate you about the way your thoughts influenced your emotions and smoking behaviour in the past. By doing so, we create a strong base for your future non-smoker set of behaviours.

At the end of this hypnosis session, you will feel confident, motivated and relaxed. You will also feel completely different about the old smoking habit, and practically all my clients stop smoking entirely at this point.

  • Core Session 2: The Crossroads.

We will quickly refresh and build upon your change of beliefs around cigarettes and ensure they have been properly modified, devalued and de-energised so that we can correct those unconscious errors and leave room for empowering beliefs to take root.

It’s like rebuilding a new house. First, you take down the older construction, and then you build the new house on top. We will then use hypnosis to lead you through a powerful transformative experience, recode experiences and expectations in your brain by building new neural pathways, and reinforce your new identity and status as a non-smoker with powerful positive suggestions.

I will also provide you with a short and practical audio recording to listen to for about a week after the hypnosis session to strengthen your confidence and cement your new non-smoker identity even further.

  • Session 3: The Reinforcer.

This session is included to replicate the increased success rate enjoyed by people undergoing multiple hypnosis sessions, as determined in various scientific studies carried out over the past 50 years. Its second objective is to ensure you feel happy, confident and satisfied as a non-smoker.

It is designed to build on certainty, confidence and fulfilment all the while continuing to cement, resource and reinforce the changes made in the previous sessions and period as a non-smoker. With this session, we will markedly increase your long term success rate, for years to come.


Other therapists may feel confident in letting you off the hook after only one session. And that’s fine. You can easily stop smoking in one session, and virtually all of my clients are non smokers by the end of session one.

The point is different though. To maximise your success rate, a little more work is ideal to make sure that even 6 or 9 months down the line you are as clear minded as ever, and that you have all the resources that you may need as a non-smoker.
